Control Valves for Corrosive Media: What to Specify

Chemical identity is the starting point. Collect the concentration, operating conditions and wetted-material requirements before discussing a lined or corrosion-resistant valve.

START HERE

Ask for a documented match between the complete process duty and the proposed wetted materials. A general description such as “acid service” leaves essential selection questions unanswered.

Start with the process location

Chemical transfer, dosing and process regulation can require different valve functions. Describe where the valve sits, what it controls and whether it isolates the line or adjusts flow during operation. Add the existing valve tag and a process sketch when available.

For control valves for corrosive media, keep chemical compatibility and control duty in the same inquiry. A material discussion needs the actual fluid conditions; a configuration discussion also needs the flow, pressure difference, control mode and installation requirements.

Collect these six groups of information

Collect these six groups of information
InformationWhat to include in the inquiry
Composition and concentrationName every known component, state the concentration and units, and identify changes between normal operation, start-up and cleaning.
TemperatureGive normal and limiting process temperatures. Describe cleaning or flushing conditions separately if they differ from normal service.
Pressure and flowProvide upstream and downstream pressures and minimum, normal and maximum flow, with units. State whether pressure values are absolute or gauge.
Particles and other conditionsDescribe solids, deposits, abrasion and any vacuum requirement. Identify intermittent conditions instead of assuming continuous operation.
Wetted materialsState required body, lining, trim and seal materials, or mark them for review. Include any project specification or existing material record.
Interfaces and documentsConfirm size, connection standard, installation constraints, actuator requirements and the drawings or material evidence needed for the order.

Where a fluorine-lined control valve fits into the discussion

A fluorine-lined control valve is one product direction to review for chemical service. Request the proposed lining and seal designations, the applicable pressure-temperature information and written confirmation for the stated medium and concentration.

Keep these confirmations tied to the particular configuration. If the fluid composition, operating temperature or cleaning procedure changes, include the change in the technical review. The product-family name alone is not a final material selection.

For a replacement, add the existing records

These records help separate a request to reproduce an existing arrangement from a request to review a different configuration. If the original selection basis is unavailable, flag it rather than treating the existing valve as proof of suitability.

  • Valve tag, nameplate and available data sheet.
  • Connection and face-to-face dimensions, with a drawing if possible.
  • Existing lining, seal and trim information, including unknown items.
  • Observed leakage, sticking or visible damage, described without assuming the cause.

Two questions to resolve before quotation

Can the chemical name alone confirm the lining?

Include composition, concentration, operating and cleaning conditions. Ask for confirmation against the proposed configuration and its material documentation.

Which supporting documents should purchasing request?

Start with the proposed configuration, material designations and applicable drawings. Identify any required inspection records or certificates by scope so the quotation can state what is included.

Use this brief for your inquiry

Send the information already available and mark unknown items. You can also include your existing data sheet or project requirements when you write to us.
