Specify the slurry and the operating duty together. A line size and the word “slurry” leave the sleeve, actuation and service requirements unresolved.
Describe the slurry beyond its name
Mining pulp, tailings and other solids-bearing streams can have different composition and operating conditions. Start a slurry pinch valve inquiry with the fluid and solids description, then state the required valve function and the location in the process.
In the pinch-valve designs discussed by Valmet, an elastomer sleeve forms the process-contacting element. This makes sleeve information a useful part of an inquiry. The material and construction for a proposed valve still need confirmation against the actual duty.
Prepare the process and sleeve information
| Information | What to send |
|---|---|
| Slurry composition | Liquid phase, known chemicals and concentration. Describe any cleaning fluid separately. |
| Solids | Solids concentration with its measurement basis, particle-size information and the available description of abrasiveness. |
| Pressure and temperature | Normal and limiting values with units. Include any vacuum or intermittent conditions for review. |
| Flow and operating mode | Required flow range and whether the valve is for isolation or modulation. State cycle frequency or the expected operating pattern. |
| Sleeve information | Specified material or existing sleeve designation, if known. Include relevant records and the maintenance observations from the existing installation. |
| Mechanical interface | Size, connection standard, face-to-face constraints, available installation space and orientation. |
| Actuation and documents | Manual, pneumatic or electric operation; control and feedback requirements; requested drawings, spare sleeve information and inspection documents. |
Make isolation and modulation requirements explicit
State whether the valve normally stays fully open, cycles between end positions or adjusts flow during operation. For modulation, include the expected flow range, pressure before and after the valve and required control signal.
Ask the supplier to identify the proposed sleeve and actuator configuration for that duty. A proposal for an isolation application should not be treated as confirmation for a different control duty without review.
Add these records for a replacement valve or sleeve
Request written confirmation of replacement compatibility, including sleeve geometry and the relevant interfaces. If an item cannot be identified from the available records, list it as an open question in the quotation review.
- Original valve model, size, nameplate and sleeve markings.
- Available valve and connection drawings.
- Installation and maintenance records already held by the plant.
- Observed wear or damage, and whether the process conditions have changed.
Two purchasing questions worth resolving
Can sleeve life be promised from the valve size?
Ask what application evidence supports any life estimate and under which conditions it applies. Keep maintenance expectations separate from unsupported service-life promises.
What should the spare-parts request identify?
Include the proposed sleeve designation, its compatible valve configuration, the available drawing or part identification and any required storage or maintenance instructions.
